The Tunatime Sportfishing Report by Captain Sal Campanile - March 10th , 2009 - Punta De Mita , Mexico

The outstanding tuna bite of January and February continues into March, as picture perfect weather continues to plague our area . Blue skies and calm seas , with temperatures hovering in the mid 70's, and 40+ mile visibility seems to be driving the fish crazy . We've been experiencing ferocious striped marlin attacks with an occasional big blue thrown in just for good measure . Tuna continue to pile up at El Banco like truck drivers at a an all you can eat pancake house, from football size to 120+ lbs , with some 200+ pounders just recently making the scales back at the dock ! Corbetena has been giving up some incredible red snapper in the 15 - 30 pound range and enough of them to give everyone a workout and fill up the fish boxes . If that isn't enough , the inshore roosterfish bite is out of control , the big gallos are head butting each other as they attack our ranger lures like ranch dogs on a rabbit . Throw an occasional 40 to 50 lbs dorado in the mix and their isn't much more to wish for...and just when it seems like thing can't get any better ........it does !!!

It's early morning in the bay of banderas , still dark , I'm sipping my hot coffee as we head offshore , and although I do this everyday , all I can think of is WHAT NEXT !?!? I can't wait to get out there again...!!!!

Man o man , I love the fall and winter ! There's been lot of excellent offshore action......we're still catching lots of big yellowfin tuna up to 250lbs , the marlin bite has been sensational - highlighted by a 91/2 hour fight with a monster black a few weeks ago - congratulations to angler Gregg Booher for hanging tough on that huge fish , hooking up at 9;30 am and releasing her at 6:30 p.m. .......here's the even more insane part - Gregg fought the fish on stand - up gear the whole time !!!!!! - and even more incredible was that the behemouth black was hooked up on an Alutecnos - 20 Gorilla , matched to a Stalker 30lbs class Frigate series rod , 80 lbs test Jerry Brown hollow core spectra with a 30 foot Seaguar 100 lbs test fluorocarbon leader , 6/0 owner gorilla live bait hook - bridled to a live goggle-eye !!!!! We were targeting tuna with

kite baits and flat lines drifting over the north ledge of Roca Corbetena when the suburban - size marlin inhaled the gog !

We couldn't believe what we saw after we set the hook and saw her erupt out of the water !!! Another incredible thing was that when we released her she was as green as when we first hooked up - truly a once - in - lifetime animal !!!!!

The heat and humidity are gone , we've got smooth blue ocean everyday with dry 75 degree weather , so if you can sneak away call us and book yourself an unforgettable fishing trip ! You can expect to hook up with big beefy yellowfin tuna , dorado, sailfish , marlin , wahoo , and big mean cubera snapper......all on the same day !!!!! Inshore action is great as well with lots of huge roosterfish , jack crevalle , pargo , and red snapper - We hope to be hookin' you up soon .....!!!

GREAT WEATHER , COW SIZE YELLOWFIN TUNA , GRANDE DORADO , AND LOTS OF HUNGRY MARLIN.......BOTH BLUE AND BLACK ! THE BITE IS ON !! YOU JUST HAVE TO FIGURE OUT WHERE TO BE , EL BANCO OR CORBETENA ......DECISIONS , DECISIONS . LUCKILY THEY'RE ONLY ABOUT 20 MILES APART AND AT 40 KNOTS , IT DOESN'T TAKE TOO LONG TO CONNECT THE WAYPOINTS .

THIS IS TRULY WORLD CLASS FISHING , WITH VERY LITLLE PRESSURE . THE SEASON GOT OFF TO A LATE START SO MY GUESS IS THAT WE'LL BE GOING STRONG THRU FEBRUARY FOR BOTH BIG MARLIN , COW SIZE TUNA, AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN !!

JUST BOOK YOUR TRIP AMIGOS....... DON'T WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR !!!

THE COWS HAVE ARRIVED WITH LOTS OF TUNA CAUGHT LAST WEEK IN THE 200 LBS CLASS WITH A FEW BREAKING 300 AND ONE TIPPED THE SCALES AT 385LBS (JUST 3 POUNDS SHY OF THE WORLD RECORD)!!!! BOTH CORBETENA AND EL BANCO HAVE BEEN PRODUCING BIG FISH , AND WE'RE CATCHING THEM BOTH ON GOGGLE-EYES AND SKIPJACKS . BIG MARLIN ARE SHOWING UP WITH LOTS OF HOOK-UPS IN THE PAST 2 WEEKS AND THE ACTION SHOULD ONLY GET BETTER . BIG DORADO ARE ALSO IN THE MIX AS WELL AS SOME CHUBAKA - SIZE CUBERA SNAPPER...... ..

IT'S WIDE OPEN DOWN HERE !! THE WEATHER IS GREAT AND THE SEAS ARE CALM , SO DON'T WAIT ANY LONGER THAN YOU HAVE TO.......THEY'RE STILL TIME TO BOOK YOUR FISHING TRIP OF A LIFETIME !!!

A COUPLE OF DAYS OF HIGH WIND AND ROUGH SEAS MADE FOR SOME TOUGH FISHING DURING A GOOD BITE WITH SOME GOOD SIZE COWS JUMPING IN THE 200 - 300+ LBS RANGE . WE MANAGED TO BRING HOME A 180LBS AND A 270LBS COW WITH MORE BIG FISH MOVING IN EVERY DAY . IN BETWEEN THE "BIG BITES" WE'RE HAVING LOTS OF FUN CASTING SURFACE POPPERS INTO SCHOOLS OF 30 - 80 LBS TUNA BUSTING UP ON TOP AND ABSOLUTELY CRUSHING OUR PLUGS !! WE'VE HAD A COUPLE OF NICE BLACK MARLIN IN THE MIX IN THE 250 - 500 LBS CLASS AS WELL . AN UNIDENTIFIED MONSTER SPOOLED US ON A PENN 70VS WITH OVER 1000 YARDS OF LINE ....AND IT ALL HAPPENED IN INDER 60 SECONDS , WHAT THE ??!!...........THAT WAS A FIRST FOR ME IN OVER 30 YEARS OF BIG GAME FISHING !!! A HEARTBREAKER THAT IS STILL KEEPING ME UP AT NIGHT , MY GUESS IS THAT IT WAS A GRANDER ++ BLACK THAT DECIDED TO HEAD FOR DEEP COVER OR A 500LBS+ YELLOWFIN THAT WOULD OF SHATTERED THE 388LBS WORLD RECORD......I HOPE IT WAS A BLACK .
