Tunatime Sportfishing Report by Capt Sal Campanile, 4/18/08
El Banco has proved to be the steady producer for over a week now . It’s almost too perfect ! Glass calm seas and football size tuna erupting on the surface in 15 minute intervals , you could almost set your watch by them .
Our normal routine is to show up a little late and piss off the usual guys who are parked on the high spots casting plugs and jigs , while we troll around at 8 - 10 knots in a grid pattern over the entire bank . Sorry guys , that’s my routine and I can’t seem to deviate from it….it produces every time . Besides , there’s something special about catchin’ em on the troll , mahi , tuna , whatever , first thing in the morning…hearing those clickers go off is kind of like an alarm clock - wakes everybody up and gets the juices flowin’ . By 9:30 the tuna are really jumping , we’ve got a few in the box so we pull em’ in and get our light tackle set up with poppers and jigs and wait for the next aerial display of fat yellowfin tuna crashing bait with reckless abandon…my kind of fish!! We’ve got 3 guys from Cali on the boat who all know how to cast , so I don’t have to worry about anybody getting an offshore lip or ear piercing . By noon we’ve put a pretty good hurtin’ on them and we switch to strictly catch and release . Lora and Largo are not too far off putting a hurtin’ of their own on the fish , and his customers look like they’re ready for the Jacuzzi . We’re heading in for some afternoon roosterfish , we give Lora some live gogs , and take off for Sayulita . Forty miles and fifty minutes later we arrive ( I love my Twinvees!) . Out go the live baits and within 5 minutes there’s a serious boil right off the left corner , customer tries to set the circle hook and… bye , bye roosterfish . We get another shot, miss another big fish and that was it for the gallos . We did hook up with two big jacks and then headed back to Punta Mita so that our clients could be back at the four seasons by 3:30 .
Fish story of the week was a grueling battle with a big tuna that hit one of Captain Braulio’s homemade jigs . What we first thought was real estate , ended up being a mini cow , first one I’ve seen this season …. unfortunately it was on the other end of a jigging rod . We fought the fish for just under 2 hours and finally get a look at her .We’ve got color and she looks like a wheel barrel . She’s on her side 10 feet down , and we’ve got the gaffs ready when one final head shake parts the 60 lbs. leader as she melts away into the deep blue . We all stood there for what seemed like an hour of silence , then we just started laughing loud and we couldn’t stop . Nothing else we could do , that fish won fair and square , kicked our asses right up until the last 30 seconds then said goodbye….I was up for a few nights thinking about that one…but you gotta love this shit , I wouldn’t trade this for any other job in the world !!
See you on the edge ,
